AFRICA ADVENTURE TRAVEL

Travel is defined as the movement of a person from one place to another, usually over a far distance.  For thousands of years, the African continent has been recognized as a place for adventure travel; explorers coming to find exotic lands, missionaries for evangelism, early traders to exploit valuable natural resources, followed by colonial powers to administer, divide and control the continent.  All these groups of people and many more after them, spoke of previously untold beautiful landscapes and land formations, amazing numbers and varieties of wildlife herds, and beautiful, friendly indigenous people.  In addition, Africa offers a beautiful climate, sustaining humans and wildlife, living in harmony.  The indigenous people were found by the first visitors, to be highly organized, exotically exciting, happy and most welcoming to these newcomers – and in that regard, nothing has changed.

The African continent is, without a doubt, extravagantly blessed with hundreds of unique attractions scattered among all the different countries, making Africa a prime destination for adventurers, nature lovers, people watchers and thrill seekers.  So many of the exotic wildlife species are endemic to specific regions; climate, geography, and human settlement with their specific cultural beliefs are all factors in this specialization.  In South Africa, for instance, one can find whales and dolphins and in Central Africa, one can find Mountain Gorillas.  So many of these are unique to each region; and there are literally dozens of such uniqueness’s.
African communities have dynamic cultural beliefs differing from country to country, differing from region to region and even regionally, there are differences from community to community. With improved educational curriculum, migration, evangelization and the need to diversify economic activities, it is becoming increasingly hard to tell from just looking at someone, which particular community they originated; a huge change from just a few years ago.  However, not everyone has had this homogeneous experience; it is still possible to visit communities that have not modernized; seeing traditional homestead settings, participating in their activities, sharing their food dishes, their music, dancing to the boom-boom of African drums, taking part in their cerebrations, rituals and ceremonies, all cause for excitement that leaves one with everlasting memories.

The African continent is quite large, and as such, the climate varies from region to region.  Altitudes are a big factor in determining temperatures and rainfall.  There are large areas of arid desert and at the same time, snow-capped mountains.  Doing a little homework before one comes to Africa, is the best course of action to take; then one knows what to expect climatically in the particular region one is headed to.  Generally, the climate is most favourable for tourism; warm sunny days, and cool nights….very conducive to outdoor activities.

Africa may be geographically a long way from your home, but keeping in touch electronically is now possible in most places.  Trends in Africa are moving these traditional cultures towards industrialization and urbanization; international banking is established in the main urban centers.  Most hotels and lodges in tourist destinations, have all the creature comforts that travelers are used to.  Many of the accommodations are equipped with saunas, beauty parlors, swimming pools and an in-house massage therapist.  WIFI is becoming much more common, making both recreational and business travel easier.  Fulfilling ones dream of going on an African adventure can now be realized without the hardship of doing without the modern conveniences many travelers enjoy.

For the more adventurous travelers, that do not consider modern conveniences important, there are numerous isolated pockets where one can encounter tribes living traditionally.  The Masai in Kenya and Tanzania welcome visitors to their simple bomas where they raise their cattle as they have for centuries; as do the Karimajong on the Uganda/Sudan border.  Further south in northern Namibia, one can find the Bushmen of the Kalahari; or the wandering nomads in the Sahara on their camels.  There are many opportunities to spend some time wi
th traditional-living people.

If it is action you are looking for, bungee jumping and whitewater rafting on the Nile, might be of more interest.  There are many places to go for a balloon ride over the vast savannas to get a bird’s eye view of the enormous herds of wildebeest, elephant and buffalo.  You can even join those nomads in the Sahara if you want a camel safari on those endless tracks through the desert. Sand boarding down the dunes in southern Namibia is an exhilarating experience.  There are countless such activities to keep your Adrenalin flowing.  Campsites are to be found in every country; from the most simple to the ultra-luxurious.
