Ugandan Tradition

Uganda Culture
Uganda belongs to very many ethnic groups, they speak over 30 different languages but English is used as official language in all the country.
Bantu speaking people
The Bantu speaking group are said to have originated from Congo region of Central Africa and they spread rapidly to the southern and eastern Africa. In Uganda we have more than half population of Bantu speaking people.
The largest groups of Bantu in Uganda are the Buganda people; they live in Kampala region and speak Luganda. Some of the Bantu speaking groups include the Banyoro, Bakiga, Banyankole, Basoga, Bafumbira and Bagishu.


Uganda as country has got strong cultural heritage in terms of kingdom and backgrounds. Some of the strong kingdoms in Uganda include the Buganda kingdom being led by the Kabaka, Busoga Kingdom being led by Kyabazinga, Iteso kingdom being led by papa Emorimor, Bunyoro kingdom being led by Omukama and Toro Kingdom led by Omukama.
Ugandan people are friendly and welcoming to all visitors who come to Uganda. Uganda is rich with culture and life styles where by each tribe has it is own dance, food type and cultural believes. Let me sample out some tribes with the names of their dances, The Buganda perform the muwogola dance, the Banyankole perform Kitagururo dance, the Banyoro perform their Runyege, the Karamojong perform their Lamakwog, the Acholi perform Bwora and Otole dances, Alur people have agwal dance and Bagisu people have Imbalu which is performed during circumcision ceremonies.


Traditional foods of Uganda
Uganda is rich with traditional foods; each tribe has different types of food. Let me first give you small break down of few tribe, for the iteso their main food is kalo [millet flour, sorghum mixed with cassava], G.nuts, peas, meat both wild and domestic meat.
The Buganda main food is matooke [banana], a true muganda lady will always cook matooke as daily food and they prepare it for some good time. They prepare matooke along side different type of sauce which is also parpared in the banana leaf, they wrap the sauce in the banana leaf and cook. sauces like chicken, G.nuts, beef, smoked fish, goat's meat and mushrooms spiced with tomatoes, irish potatoes, salt, and same little water. The all thing is called Luwombo, chicken luwombo or beef luwombo. Don't miss to eat that delicious meal when you come to Uganda.
