Remote Game Reserve Matheniko



Matheniko Game Reserve
Matheniko game reserve is situated in Moroto district in the plains of Karamoja to the north of Mount Elgon and it is part of the corridor of the protected areas in Karamoja sub-region that stretches from Kidepo valleynational park through Bokora and pian upe game reserves.  The game reserve is on the border of Uganda and Kenya.
Matheniko game reserve is position in the popular Somali-Masai environment of semi-desert grassland and some parts of them being shrubland.
Matheniko game reserve is ranking in the 5th position of the largest protected conservation areas in Uganda. The reserve is covering an area of approximately 1,520 square kilometers.
The reserve receives average rainfall that falls every year and the rainfalls are estimated to be 670 mltrs. The rains fall much in the month of April, May and around November making the reserve vegetation so lush.




Matheniko game reserve has few harbors species of wildlife compared to other reserves and national parks that makes Matheniko game reserve not to be busy [the reserve is rarely visited by the tourists]
The reserve is being managed by Uganda wildlife authority and the reserve has the best species of vegetation despite the location of the reserve.
Matheniko game reserve is blessed with some number of mammals and bird species which include roan antelope, kudu, ostriches and bird species are; lemon Dove, mountain yellow warbler and grey cuckoo-shrike.
